Hi friends. I am Dr.Pushpalata. Today I will be talking about millets. Millets have always been a staple food in India for more than 8,000 years. Further, India is the largest producer of millets. They are gluten-free and very nutritious. So it can be consumed by people with gluten sensitivity. Millets are rich in protein and carbohydrates so it makes for a very good energy booster. Not only do they regulate blood sugar but also help in weight loss. They are very rich in antioxidants and so help to lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure. Due to this, they reduce the risk of heart disease. Millets also help to prevent the risk of cancer.
Jowar Millet has the quality of "lagoo guna shita virya". This means it is light for digestion and has a cooling effect on the body. It is best consumed in summer that is "Grishma Ruthu". Those with arthritis and constipation should consume this in fewer quantities. Jowar helps in weight loss and regulates blood sugar also.
Bajra millet is a variety of millet that has "Ushhna villa". It increases "Agni" or the digestive fire. It is heavy to digest when compared to Ragi or Jowar. It is best to consume this in "Hemanth Ruthu" or cold season. It also increases hemoglobin and helps in weight loss.
Ragi is a type of millet that is "Lagoo" or light in "gunum" and is "anushanu" - which means it is neither "Ushna" nor "Shita". So it neither has Ushna-guna nor shita-guna on the body. It helps to increase hemoglobin percent and builds stamina. Ragi is rich in calcium and it's very easy to cook. it's very good food for a child's development and growth
