Impact of Insufficient sleep on our health

Impact of Insufficient sleep on our health

Sleep is essential for our physical and mental health. It helps us to stay alert, focused and productive during the day. Unfortunately, many of us don't get enough sleep, which can harm our health. Insufficient sleep can lead to a weakened immune system, increased risk of depression and anxiety, weight gain, and even heart disease. We must take steps to ensure we are getting enough restful sleep each night to maintain our physical and mental well-being.

  1. Change your schedule
Do not go to bed before you're tired. If you feel like you need more sleep, then it is ok to stay in bed a little later or take a nap during the day. However, if you do not feel sleepy until much later than usual, then set your alarm for earlier than usual. We must give ourselves time to relax our eyes and body before sleep so that when we hit the pillow at night, our brain doesn't experience as much stimulation from the light being switched on and off all day long. (If this becomes difficult for some people, then they can use a sleep mask or just dim the lights in their bedroom.)
  2. Get light during the day
Too much exposure to artificial light during the day can be harmful because it stimulates certain pathways in your brain that trigger stress responses. So be sure to take steps to reduce that lighting exposure during your waking hours and increase natural light as much as possible (such as through window plants and opening curtains).
  3. Eat less caffeine and carbs
Do not drink caffeinated beverages, such as coffee, tea, or sodas within four hours of going to bed. Coffee can also cause trouble for people who are sensitive to caffeine because it contains a substance that increases the activity of a natural chemical (diuretic hormone) in the brain. For best results, drink lots of water. One should reduce their caffeine consumption to 1-2 cups per day. “Do not consume caffeine within four hours of going to bed.
  4. Eat a balanced diet.
Its a must to eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein like fish or poultry. This not only protects and boosts your immunity, but also keeps you satiated longer and helps with your sleep

Eat a healthy balance of carbohydrates and protein

  • Do not drink alcohol before going to bed.
  • One should refrain from drinking alcohol before going to bed.
  • Do not have more than one alcoholic beverage per day.
  • Do not consume more than one caffeinated beverage per day.
  • Do not consume more than five cups of coffee or tea in a day.
  • Eating natural foods is important for proper brain function.
