प्रत्येक महिन्याच्या कृष्ण पक्षातील त्रयोदशी युक्त चतुर्दशीला शिवरात्र असते. परंतु माघ महिन्यातील माघ कृष्ण चतुर्दशीला जे शिवरात्र येते तिला महाशिवरात्री असे म्हणतात. चतुर्दशी दोन दिवसांत विभागलेली असेल, तर ज्या मध्यरात्री चतुर्दशी येत असेल, ती शिवरात्र मानली जाते. यावरून शिवरात्रीचा कालनिश्चय करताना दिवसाला महत्त्व नसून रात्रीला महत्व आहे, हे स्पष्ट होते. मध्यरात्र, वद्यपक्ष, शिशिर ऋतू, चतुर्दशी या महाशिवरात्रीच्या कालिक वैशिष्ट्यांमधून सृष्टीतील संहार व पुनर्निर्मिती यांचे चक्र सूचित होते, असे काही अभ्यासकांना वाटते.शिवाच्या विश्रांतीच्या काळात शिवतत्त्वाचे कार्य थांबते, म्हणजेच त्या काळात शिव ध्यानावस्थेतून समाधी-अवस्थेत जातो. शिवाची समाधी-अवस्था म्हणजे शिवाने स्वत:साठी साधना करण्याचा काळ. त्या काळात विश्वातील तमोगुण शिवतत्त्व स्वीकारत नाही.
