Cultivation Areas

Red rice, also known as Kattuyanam rice is one of the native varieties cultivated in South India especially in Tamil Nadu.  It is normally cultivated during the Samba (July 15th to January 14th ) season. This variety of rice grows very tall, approx 100cm and is very hardy. It is said that the stalks grow so high that they can hide a wild elephant easily. Hence the name Kattu(forest) Yanam(Elephant) rice for this variety. It takes about 125 to 135 days for this crop to yield. Usually, rice/paddy cultivation needs a lot of water but this variety is drought resistant. Also, no pesticides are needed for Red rice cultivation. The grain is hardy and nutritious. Apart from providing health benefits it also provides environmental benefits like increasing fertility and water retention capacity of the soil. It can withstand flooding to a great extent. This variety of rice can be cultivated in any climate as it can survive the driest conditions.

Red Rice – Kattuyanam rice (Tamil name)

Red Rice is a rice variety with amazing health benefits derived from its rich content of antioxidants, iron, manganese, vitamin B, and vitamin E amongst many other nutrients. Red rice contains red husk and is loaded with the goodness of natureThe presence of anthocyanin pigment on the outermost layer of the rice kernel is what gives it its attractive Red color. Anthocyanins are colored water-soluble pigments, which are responsible for the colors – red, purple, and blue in fruits, grains, and vegetables. This rice is unhulled or partially hulled, and has a red husk, unlike the more common brown rice. Nutty in flavor, red rice has high nutritional values, compared to the polished rice varieties. Red rice has 10 times more antioxidants than brown rice. Red rice is also very rich in essential nutrients, iron, vitamin, phosphorus, and fiber. Not only is the grain useful, but the hay of this paddy variety is used for making thatched roofs and as fodder for cattle. Flattened rice made from this rice variety is suitable for making rice payasam/sweet porridge (a South Indian sweet dish).  It is also suitable for the preparation of idly, dosa, idiyappam, and other favorite rice varieties.

What is Anthocyanin?
Anthocyanins are colored water-soluble pigments belonging to the phenolic group. Anthocyanins responsible for the colors, red, purple, and blue, are in fruits and vegetables. Berries, currants, grapes, and some tropical fruits have high anthocyanin content. Red to purplish blue-colored leafy vegetables, grains, roots, and tubers are edible vegetables that contain a high level of anthocyanins. As it acts as an antioxidant, it helps in fighting free radicals.

And What are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are toxic by-products of oxygen metabolism which can cause significant damage to living cells and tissues. So antioxidant-rich food is necessary to fight the free radicals (oxidative stress). Anthocyanin also has anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous, and anti-viral properties.

Red rice, the Super Grain!
Cultivation of Red rice is very hardy and so the cultivation is usually done via organic farming. As mentioned earlier it does not require as much water as other rice varieties and can withstand drought conditions. It requires less labor for ploughing, weeding, and management as compared to other rice varieties. This paddy does not need any pesticides or chemical fertilisers.
