Coconut oil in Ayurveda

Coconut oil with its unique chemical structure has many healing properties. It is anti-microbial, anti-fungal & anti-bacterial. All these properties make it a perfect ingredient in the preparation of many medicines in Ayurveda. Let’s dive right into it!

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a system of medicine in existence for over 5000 yrs. It believes that good health can be achieved only by balancing body, mind, and spirit.

As you all know, we are all made of 5 elements earth, air, water, fire, and space. When these elements go out of balance they manifest as a dosha in one’s system. There are majorly 3 types of doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata is comprised of Ether and Air, Pitta of Fire and Water, and Kapha of Earth and Water. The Doshas are biological energies found throughout the human body and mind. They show up in all our characteristics, from the way we eat and digest to the way we sleep.

Simply put, recognizing the imbalance and fixing it by natural means with herbs is primarily how Ayurveda treatment is done

Uses of Coconut oil in Ayurveda

Ayurveda refers to coconut tree as Kalpa Vriksha, meaning a tree that supplies all that is needed to live. The main component that sets coconut oil apart from other oils is the presence of Lauric acid. Naturally this MCT acid is available only in Mother’s breast milk. Coconut oil has a high concentration of lauric acid after mother’s milk. This acid has proven to be having antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory benefits. It calms Vata, Pitta and supports Kapha when used properly.

There are a number of Ayurvedic medicines which use Coconut oil as their base. These are predominatly used externally and also internally depending on the health condition.
